SGB Premature Redemption Dates in October 2026How Is the SGB Premature Redemption Price Calculated? How Can Investors Submit an Early Redemption Request?

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has scheduled four redemption dates during the month, but investors must submit their requests within the prescribed application windows.

Sovereign Gold Bonds are government securities linked to the price of gold.

They offer investors exposure to gold prices without requiring them to store physical gold, along with fixed interest payments under the scheme’s applicable terms.

SGB Premature Redemption Dates in October 2026

According to the October 2026 schedule, four SGB tranches are eligible for premature redemption. The dates and request windows differ depending on the series and original issue date.

The important dates are:

SGB 2019-20 Series V: Redemption on October 15, 2026. The request window was September 14 to October 5, 2026.

SGB 2020-21 Series VII: Redemption on October 19, 2026. The request window was September 19 to October 9, 2026.

SGB 2020-21 Series I: Redemption on October 28, 2026. The request window is September 26 to October 19, 2026.

SGB 2019-20 Series VI: Redemption on October 30, 2026. The request window is September 29 to October 21, 2026.

Investors should note that the first two redemption dates have passed as of October 19, 2026.

Those holding the remaining eligible tranches should check whether their request has been submitted within the applicable deadline.

How Is the SGB Premature Redemption Price Calculated?

Sovereign Gold Bonds normally have an eight-year maturity period, but investors can opt for premature redemption after completing five years from the date of issue.

Early redemption is permitted on specified interest payment dates, subject to the RBI’s schedule and request procedure.

The redemption price is based on the simple average of the closing prices of 999-purity gold over the three preceding business days, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association.

The amount received therefore depends on the applicable gold price rather than the original purchase price alone.

SGB investors also receive interest at 2.5% per annum on the initial investment amount, paid half-yearly under the scheme’s terms. Investors should account for applicable tax rules when calculating their overall returns.

How Can Investors Submit an Early Redemption Request?

Eligible investors can contact the bank, post office or other authorised channel through which their bonds are held.

Depending on the holding method, redemption requests may also be handled through the relevant depository or RBI Retail Direct platform.

Investors should verify the exact series and issue date in their holding statement before applying.

The request-submission window closes before the redemption date, so waiting until the redemption day may mean missing the opportunity.

As of October 19, 2026, the request window for SGB 2020-21 Series I is scheduled to close today.

Investors holding this tranche should urgently confirm the deadline and submission process with their authorised provider. For SGB 2019-20 Series VI, the request window remains open until October 21, 2026.

Before choosing early redemption, investors should compare their need for liquidity with the remaining interest payments and potential tax implications.

Checking the official RBI schedule and the terms applicable to the specific bond series can help avoid missed deadlines and unexpected costs.
