The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced a major update to the Universal Account Number (UAN) system.
The entire process of creating and activating a UAN is now fully digital and more secure than before.
From now on, Aadhaar-based face authentication is mandatory for UAN generation.
This new system works through the government’s UMANG app, allowing employees to complete the process directly from their mobile phones without depending on employers.

What Has Changed in the UAN System?
Earlier, employees usually depended on their employers to generate a UAN.
This often caused delays and sometimes even errors in the process.
With the new system, EPFO has made the process completely self-service and digital.
Employees can now create and activate their UAN on their own using Aadhaar verification and face recognition technology.
This change became mandatory from 1 August 2025 and is aimed at improving accuracy, reducing fake accounts, and making the system more secure.
A UAN is a 12-digit unique number that stays the same throughout an employee’s working life and is linked to their Provident Fund account.
How Face Authentication Works
The new system uses Aadhaar-linked mobile verification along with facial recognition technology to confirm identity.
To complete the process, users need to:
Download the UMANG app
Install the Aadhaar Face RD app
Open EPFO services and select “UAN Allotment and Activation”
Enter Aadhaar number and linked mobile number
Verify OTP
Complete face scan for authentication
Once the face verification is successful, the UAN is either generated or activated instantly.
This process ensures that the identity is verified more accurately and reduces manual errors in data entry.
Why This Change Matters for Employees
The biggest advantage of this update is convenience. Employees no longer need to visit offices or depend on their employer for UAN creation.
It also speeds up access to key EPFO services like:
KYC updates
Passbook downloads
PF withdrawal claims
EPFO believes this move will strengthen Digital India and make PF-related services more transparent and user-friendly.
Are There Any Concerns?
While the system is designed to improve efficiency, some organisations have raised concerns about possible technical issues during the initial phase.
However, the government has stated that the system will be improved continuously based on user experience and feedback.
The Bottom Line
The introduction of Aadhaar-based face authentication marks a major shift in how PF accounts are managed in India.
It makes the UAN process faster, safer, and fully digital.
For employees, this means fewer delays, less paperwork, and more control over their PF accounts.
Overall, this is a significant step toward simplifying retirement savings management in the country.
