Wheat MSP has been increased by ₹25 per quintal for the 2027-28 Rabi marketing season, taking the minimum support price from ₹2,585 to ₹2,610 per quintal.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the revised MSP for all six mandated Rabi crops.
The government said the revised prices are aimed at ensuring remunerative returns for farmers and are based on factors including production costs and other market considerations.
For wheat, the government has estimated the cost of production at ₹1,264 per quintal, with the new MSP representing a 106% margin over that cost.
Wheat MSP Increased for 2027-28
The new wheat MSP of ₹2,610 per quintal is ₹25 higher than the 2026-27 rate of ₹2,585. Wheat received the smallest absolute increase among the six Rabi crops covered by the Cabinet decision.
The government has also revised the MSP of barley, gram, lentil, rapeseed and mustard, and safflower for the 2027-28 marketing season. The highest increase of ₹675 per quintal has been approved for safflower.
New MSP Rates for Other Rabi Crops
The MSP for barley has been increased by ₹136 to ₹2,286 per quintal, while gram MSP has gone up by ₹83 to ₹5,958. Lentil MSP has been increased by ₹390 to ₹7,390 per quintal.
For oilseed crops, the MSP for rapeseed and mustard has increased by ₹413 to ₹6,613 per quintal. Safflower has received an increase of ₹675, taking its MSP to ₹7,215 per quintal.
Government Sets MSP Based on Production Costs
The government has said that the MSP increases follow the policy of fixing MSPs at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production.
The cost calculation includes expenses such as labour, leased land, seeds, fertilisers, irrigation, machinery and working capital.
For wheat, the official figures show a production cost of ₹1,264 per quintal against an MSP of ₹2,610. The government has stated that the revised prices are intended to provide remunerative prices to growers and encourage crop diversification.
Wheat MSP and Rabi Farming
Wheat is one of India’s major Rabi crops, and its revised MSP will apply to the 2027-28 Rabi marketing season. The announcement comes as the government prepares the support prices for the upcoming crop cycle.
The Cabinet decision covers all six mandated Rabi crops, with the revised MSPs intended to give farmers greater price visibility when planning cultivation for the season.
