If you are an EPFO member and have recently got married, you should check your EPF nomination immediately.
Many people nominate their parents or other family members when they start working.
But after marriage, they may forget to update the nominee in their EPF account.
Under the new EPF Scheme 2026, this could create problems for your family in the future.
Why Does the Old EPF Nomination Become Invalid After Marriage?
The new EPF Scheme 2026 was notified on June 29, 2026.
According to Paragraph 44 of the scheme, a member has to make a fresh nomination after marriage.
Any nomination made before the marriage will be treated as invalid.
For example, if you had nominated your parents when you started your job and later got married, that old nomination will no longer remain valid.
You will therefore need to submit a new e-nomination through the EPFO portal.
Do You Have to Make Your Spouse the Nominee?
Not necessarily.
The new rules do not require you to give 100% of your EPF benefits to your spouse.
You can nominate an eligible family member according to the applicable rules.
However, the nominee must fall within the definition of “family” under the EPF Scheme 2026.
If a married member nominates someone who does not qualify as a family member, that nomination can also be treated as invalid under the applicable provisions.
What Happens If You Don’t Update Your Nomination?
Failing to update your nomination can create difficulties for your family if something unfortunate happens to you.
Experts advise EPF-EPS members to make a fresh nomination after marriage.
Without a valid nomination, the process of claiming EPF and EPS benefits after the member’s death could become more complicated and may take longer.
There is another important benefit to consider.
The EPF account is also linked to the EDLI (Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance) Scheme.
Eligible beneficiaries can receive life insurance benefits of up to Rs 7 lakh in case of the member’s death.
Without proper nomination details, the family may face additional difficulties while claiming the applicable benefits.
When Should You Update Your EPFO Nomination?
There is reportedly no fixed deadline for completing EPFO e-nomination.
However, it is better not to delay the process.
Members should consider updating their nomination whenever there is a major change in their family situation, such as marriage or the birth of a child.
Keeping your EPF nomination updated can help ensure that your family faces fewer problems while claiming the benefits in the future.
