EPF Advance Withdrawal Rules have been changed to make PF advances easier for employees facing specific financial needs.

EPFO has grouped eligible withdrawals into three broad categories covering essential needs, housing needs and special circumstances.

Under the updated rules, an employee can withdraw up to 75% of the total EPF balance, including employee and employer contributions and the interest earned on them, after completing 12 months of EPF membership.

EPF Advance Withdrawal Rules and Eligibility

The 12-month membership condition applies across the withdrawal categories.

Once this requirement is met, eligible members can seek an advance from their PF account for approved purposes.

The three categories cover essential needs such as illness, education and marriage; housing-related requirements such as buying or constructing a home; and certain special circumstances notified by the EPFO or its Central Board of Trustees.

The revised framework is intended to make it easier for members to understand when they can seek an advance and how frequently they can use the facility.

How Many Times Can You Withdraw PF Money?

For medical treatment of the employee or family members, there is no specified limit on the number of advances.

This makes the provision useful for members who may face recurring medical expenses.

For education-related expenses, an employee can take an EPF advance up to 10 times during the membership period.

For marriage-related expenses involving the employee or family, the limit is up to five times during the membership period.

Housing-related withdrawals also have a maximum limit of five times during the membership period.

This category covers buying a house, flat or plot, construction, repayment of a home loan and renovation or improvement of a house.

For specified special circumstances, the advance can be taken up to two times in a financial year.

PF Advance Withdrawal for House and Education

The housing category is broader than simply buying a ready-to-move home.

Eligible requirements can include purchasing a house, flat or plot, constructing a house, repaying a housing loan and carrying out renovation or improvement work.

Education is also included among the essential needs.

Members can use the provision for themselves or their family, subject to the applicable conditions and the overall withdrawal eligibility.

The number of permitted withdrawals does not mean that money can be taken out without limits.

The member must still meet the relevant conditions and have sufficient eligible balance in the EPF account.

How to Apply for EPF Advance

Members can apply for an EPF advance through the EPFO’s online portal. Before applying, the bank account and PAN/Aadhaar KYC requirements should be completed and correctly linked with the PF account.

According to the information shared by EPFO, after an eligible advance application is submitted, the money may reach the member’s bank account within around two to three days.

Employees should check their account details and KYC information before submitting a claim.

They should also consider whether withdrawing retirement savings is necessary, particularly when the requirement can be managed through other financial resources.
