The new process specifies the documents and affidavits needed for cases such as data-entry errors, surname changes and removal of aliases.

Aadhaar Name Update Rules Change Under New SOP

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued a new SOP for updating names in Aadhaar.

The procedure categorises name-related requests according to the type of correction and specifies the supporting documents required in each case.

The revised guidelines are intended to provide a defined process for handling different types of name updates.

Applicants will need to follow the requirements applicable to their particular case instead of submitting the same documents for every type of correction.

Affidavit Required for Data Entry Errors

If the name has been entered incorrectly in Aadhaar because of a data-entry mistake, the applicant will need to submit the prescribed affidavit along with the required identity or relationship document.

For adults, the prescribed process includes Annexure-B, while Annexure-C applies to minors.

The supporting document should contain the correct name and meet the requirements specified for the update request.

[[H2: Marriage and Divorce Name Changes

The revised process also covers surname changes following marriage or divorce.

In such cases, applicants will have to provide the prescribed Annexure-D affidavit along with the required identity-related documents.

This means people seeking a surname change after a change in marital status will need to prepare documents according to the specific category of their request.

Separate Process for Removing Alias or Titles

The SOP also provides a separate process when a person wants to remove one of the names recorded with terms such as “urf” or alias.

Adults will need the prescribed Annexure-E affidavit, while Annexure-F applies to minors, along with the required identity or relationship documents.

The guidelines also cover removal of ranks, posts and prefixes such as Dr., Colonel, Shri, Smt. and Mr. The update will be processed on the basis of the prescribed identity document.

Gazette May Be Needed for Major Name Changes

For a major change in a person’s name or identity, the prescribed process may require a Gazette notification.

UIDAI’s existing procedure also provides for a Gazette notification and an identity document showing the old name for a complete name change.

Applicants should therefore identify the category of their requested correction before submitting a name-update request.

The required documents and affidavit can differ depending on whether the request involves a minor correction, a marriage or divorce-related change, removal of an alias or a major name change.

Aadhaar Name Update Rules Change also means applicants should avoid using an old or incorrect affidavit format for their request.

The revised SOP specifies the applicable document and annexure for different situations.

Name updates are generally handled at an Aadhaar Enrolment or Update Centre, where the applicant submits the request and supporting documents for verification.

The revised process is particularly relevant for Aadhaar holders whose names contain spelling or data-entry errors, have changed after marriage or divorce, or include additional names, aliases or titles that they want removed.
