The deadline is particularly important this month because of changes to the statutory wage ceiling for EPF coverage, which took effect on September 17, 2026.

Missing the deadline could lead to interest and penal damages under the applicable rules.

Employers should verify employee details, calculate the contributions correctly and ensure that the required PF amount is deposited on time.

EPFO September 2026 ECR Deadline and New Rules

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) requires covered establishments to file their monthly ECR and deposit the corresponding provident fund contributions.

September return also involves a revised wage ceiling, making accurate payroll calculations especially important for employers and HR teams.

The statutory wage ceiling for mandatory EPF coverage has increased from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month, effective September 17, 2026.

The change can bring additional eligible employees under mandatory coverage and affect contribution calculations for existing members whose PF wages were previously capped at the lower amount.

For September, employers must account for the two periods separately while filing a single monthly return.

The applicable wage ceiling was Rs 15,000 for September 1–16 and Rs 25,000 from September 17–30, subject to the relevant membership and scheme provisions.

What Happens If Employers Miss the Deadline?

Under Section 7Q of the EPF law, delayed payments can attract interest at 12% per annum on the outstanding amount.

Employers may also face damages under Section 14B, with the applicable amount depending on the delay and the relevant rules.

These additional costs make timely payment important for establishments managing monthly payroll and provident fund obligations.

Employees should also keep track of their PF contributions to ensure that the amounts deducted from their salaries are reflected correctly in their accounts.

The October 15 deadline applies to both filing the September ECR and depositing the amount due.

Filing the return without completing the required payment does not fulfil the entire compliance obligation.

How to File the September PF Return

Employers can complete the process through the EPFO employer portal.

They should log in using their establishment credentials, prepare the ECR file with the required employee salary and contribution details, and upload it in the prescribed format.

After uploading the file, employers should verify the information, generate the challan and obtain the Transaction Reference Number (TRRN).

The final step is to pay the amount due and retain the payment records for future reference.
Payroll teams should also check employee eligibility and apply the revised wage ceiling correctly when calculating September contributions.

A careful review can help avoid filing errors, payment delays and additional compliance costs.
