Starting a business often requires money, and many people struggle because they don’t have property or other assets to offer as collateral.

To help entrepreneurs and businesses, the Central Government is providing loan guarantees under the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0.

Under this scheme, the government acts as a guarantor, making it easier for eligible businesses to get loans from banks and financial institutions.

Since the launch of ECLGS 5.0, the government has issued over 4.11 lakh loan guarantees worth ₹1.55 lakh crore, helping businesses access much-needed funds.

What Is ECLGS 5.0?

The Union Cabinet approved ECLGS 5.0 on May 5, 2026 to provide quick financial support to businesses affected by geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

The scheme reduces the risk for banks by offering government-backed guarantees on loans.

This encourages financial institutions to lend more confidently to eligible businesses.

The main aim is to help companies manage cash flow, continue operations, and recover from financial difficulties.

MSMEs Get Up to 100% Government Guarantee

According to the Finance Ministry, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) receive a 100% government guarantee on eligible additional loans under the scheme.

For other business categories, the government provides a 90% guarantee.

This support has boosted the confidence of banks and financial institutions, allowing them to approve and disburse loans more quickly to eligible borrowers.

MSMEs Are the Biggest Beneficiaries

The government says MSMEs have received the largest share of the scheme’s benefits.

Around 98% of all guarantees issued so far have gone to MSMEs, while 82% of the total guaranteed loan amount has been provided to this sector.

This highlights the government’s focus on supporting small and medium businesses, which play a key role in creating jobs and driving economic growth.

Awareness Campaign Running Across the Country

To ensure that more businesses benefit from the scheme, the Department of Financial Services (DFS) has launched a nationwide awareness campaign.

The first phase has already been completed in nine locations with support from the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC), National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company (NCGTC), PSB Alliance, banks, industry associations, and entrepreneurs.

The second phase is currently underway in 10 locations, with programs already completed in four of them.

The government says these awareness drives are designed to help eligible borrowers understand the scheme and ensure that Member Lending Institutions (MLIs) can provide timely financial assistance to businesses that need it most.
